About Interact 5490
Interact District 5490 is comprised of more than 40 middle school and high school Interact clubs, all sponsored by Rotary clubs. These service clubs are both campus-based and community-based. Our Interact district is the northwest part of Arizona (including the metro- Phoenix area west of 7th Street), plus Needles, CA, and Laughlin, NV. Our Interact District is the mirror-image of Rotary District 5490, including our leadership structure. We are one of three Interact and Rotary districts in Arizona — the other two being District 5500 (southern Arizona) and District 5510 (northeastern Arizona). Of the three districts, Interact District 5490 has the largest number of Interact clubs. Interact is one of five Rotary- sponsored Youth Services programs — the others being our annual leadership conference, Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE), New Generations Service Exchange (NGSE), and Rotaract (for ages 19-30). Interact membership is open to all youth ages 12-18, without regard togender, creed or color. Like Rotary, our motto is “Service Above Self.”
District Administration, Events and Project
Interact District 5490 is governed by an annually-selected District Council, consisting of a District Governor, Chief Assistant Governor and nine Assistant Governors, each having an assigned group of Interact clubs in their area to encourage and support. This year’s Governor is Carly Arevalo, a junior at Lake Havasu High School. The Chief Assistant Governor is Dylan Boyd, a sophomore at Mohave High School in Bullhead City. The District Council has monthly on-line meetings. Advisors to the Council are District Interact Chair, Ken Kelley (email@example.com), and District Youth Services Chair, Art Harrington (firstname.lastname@example.org). Interact District 5490 promotes and participates in the Tri-District Fall Leadership Conference, November 8, 2015, at ASU Tempe, and we annually sponsor our own Interact District Conference, February 27, 2016, at Central High School in Phoenix. Our district-wide international service project this year is Crutches 4 Africa, with our Interact clubs working together to collect crutches, walkers, wheelchairs and other mobility devices that we will pack into a 40-foot shipping container at our District Conference, and then ship to our International partner in Kenya for distribution there to those most in need of these mobility devices.
